The Uniform Patrol Division is often referred to as the “backbone of the police department” due to the essential and demanding responsibilities its officers carry out daily. These officers serve the community around the clock, in all weather conditions, and are easily recognizable by their uniforms and marked patrol vehicles. As the first responders to 911 calls, they are frequently the first on the scene and play a vital role in identifying and interrupting criminal activity through proactive patrol efforts. Their duties also include collecting evidence and conducting thorough investigations that are crucial for successful case resolutions.
The division is led by Lieutenant Brian Hunt, who has been with the Acworth Police Department since 2003. Over the course of his career, Lieutenant Hunt has held several key roles, including Jail Administrator, Community Relations Liaison, Patrol Supervisor, and Training Division Supervisor. He currently oversees the daily operations of the Uniform Patrol Division.
As the largest division within the Acworth Police Department, the Uniform Patrol Division is responsible for delivering comprehensive law enforcement services to the community 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. It operates with four patrol shifts, each staffed with a team of officers working 12-hour rotations. Every shift is supervised by a sergeant and supported by a corporal, who also serves as an assistant supervisor and Field Training Officer (FTO).
Each patrol officer is assigned a vehicle equipped with advanced law enforcement technology, including digital in-car video systems and laptop computers. These tools enable officers to receive dispatch calls, complete reports while remaining in the field, and conduct real-time checks through GCIC and NCIC databases. The in-car video systems feature pre-event recording and crash-activation capabilities, enhancing both officer safety and accountability.
The functional responsibilities of the Uniform Patrol Division include, but are not limited to:
- Providing community-oriented policing at the highest level
- Protecting life and property
- Enforcing all laws and ordinances
- Preserving peace and public order
- Identifying criminal offenders and criminal activity
- Apprehending offenders
- Providing general traffic services and enforcement
The commander of the Uniform Patrol Division reports directly to the Field Operations Commander and the Chief of Police
